Graciousness is not always high on the list of attributes you find in successful rock ‘n’ roll stars.

Because of this, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions have sometimes brought out the worst in its inductees, whether continuing once-private feuds in public or launching criticism at the hall itself. This year it’s Kiss that’s angry, its members upset over the organization’s decision only to induct original members Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Peter Criss and Ace Frehley while excluding members who joined later.

As a result, the makeup-wearing rockers won’t be wearing makeup or rocking at Thursday’s ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn when they’re inducted with Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Linda Ronstadt, Hall and Oates, Yes, Cat Stevens, late Beatles manager Brian Epstein and former Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham, who also is boycotting this year’s show over dissatisfaction with his role.

Here’s a quick look at seven other acts who chose to make the ceremony uncomfortable for everyone else or just skipped it altogether:

— The guys in Guns N’ Roses are at a point now where they can sometimes play nice together, but that was not the case when the Los Angeles rockers were inducted in 2012. Frontman Axl Rose decided to skip the ceremony because it didn’t “appear to be somewhere I’m actually wanted or respected.” Guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagen and drummer Steve Adler, however, did take the stage, performing together for the first time in nearly two decades. Myles Kennedy served as the stand-in for Rose.

— There was nary a Van Halen during the towering rock band’s induction. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen chose to enter rehab the week before the 2007 ceremony — a pretty rock-solid excuse. But his drummer brother Alex also chose not to attend. And original lead singer David Lee Roth pulled a very Roth-like maneuver and pulled out at the last minute in a huff over what song he’d perform at the event. That left bassist Michael Anthony and second singer Sammy Hagar as the only official attendees. They were reduced to performing with Paul Shaffer’s house band.

— John Fogerty also faced the prospects of a put-together band when he refused to play with surviving Creedence Clearwater Revival members, bassist Stu Cook and drummer Doug Clifford. He rallied with a couple of all-stars — Bruce Springsteen and The Band’s Robbie Robertson — to back him on stage, but the rift became oh so public when Cook and Clifford left the room while Fogerty played. The band split in 1972 and Fogerty was still holding grudges at the 1993 induction, telling Cook and Clifford he wouldn’t play with them ever again when they showed up for rehearsal earlier in the day. Cook and Clifford returned when the lights came back up, with a forlorn Cook holding the bass he’d hoped to play.

— The Sex Pistols were among the first and most notorious punk rock bands and fittingly extended a metaphorical middle finger to the hall of fame when finally inducted in 2007 — six years after it was first eligible. The British band, which featured lead singer Johnny Rotten and late bassist Sid Vicious, said in a hand-written and ungrammatical note posted on its website that the hall was like “urine in wine” selling “old famous”: “Were not coming. Were not your monkeys and so what?” Rolling Stone magazine founder Jann Wenner read the letter in its entirety, and invited the band to pick up their trophies anyway: “If they want to smash them into bits, they can do that, too.”

— The middle finger was not metaphorical at all when Elvis Costello briefly appeared on stage as his backing band The Attractions during the same 2007 ceremony the Sex Pistols didn’t attend. The British singer had been touring with two members of the band, but was in a long-running feud with bassist Bruce Thomas that spilled over onstage. Thomas took his trophy from a presenter, said, “Thanks for the memories, that’s it,” and then walked off the stage and out the door. Costello marked his exit with his middle finger.

— Members of Blondie added even more bad blood to the 2007 ceremony as a division between founding members Debbie Harry and Chris Stein and Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison spilled onto the stage. Harry and Stein had begun performing together in 1999 without the band’s other three members and Infante and Harrison sued unsuccessfully to rejoin the band. Infante continued to lobby Harry onstage at the ceremony: “Debbie, are we allowed?” She declined and the band went on to play its three biggest hits with stand-ins. “They wrote themselves out of the band history, as far as I’m concerned,” Stein said backstage. “They should have a little bit of honor. This is supposed to be rock ‘n’ roll. This is supposed to be friendly. This is like going through the trenches together.”

— Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr recently reunited to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Beatles’ first trip to the U.S. But things weren’t always so copacetic, as McCartney showed when he failed to show up to the group’s induction in 1988. He explained the decision through a publicist: “After 20 years, the Beatles still have some business differences. I would feel like a complete hypocrite waving and smiling with them at a fake reunion.”

NEW YORK (AP) — In a rare and unusual mix of rock legends, AC/DC lead singer Brian Johnson made a surprise appearance at Billy Joel’s concert at Madison Square Garden and played the metal band’s classic, “You Shook Me All Night Long.”

Joel introduced Johnson about halfway through the show Friday night, saying Johnson was part of one of the best bands he’d ever seen live. The packed arena erupted when Joel and his band began playing the rock anthem with Johnson on lead vocals.

The show was part of a series of concerts by Joel at the Garden. He’s playing there monthly as an artist-in-residence.

Friday’s show included a mix of Joel standards such as “Uptown Girl” and “Big Shot” as well as less-played songs, such as “The Ballad of Billy the Kid.”

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lady Gaga vowed to quit pop music rather than compromise, detailing a difficult year that included an underperforming new album during her much-anticipated keynote session at South By Southwest on Friday.

Dressed in a gown made of plastic sheeting and wearing blond dreadlocks, Gaga spent an hour in a wide-ranging question-and-answer session that shed some light on obstacles that included hip surgery, a split from manager Troy Carter and widespread questions about her popularity.

“I refuse to compromise and allow my talents to be monetized to the point that I don’t want to be here anymore,” she said. “I will stop, I will quit, I will retire from the commercial market if I have to do something other than be myself because if I can’t be myself in this moment than everything I have said to my friends since the beginning will be a total lie. Then what? I’ll be myself until I have to make money to sustain a luxurious lifestyle, and then I change, right? No, I’ll be myself till they (expletive) close the coffin so that you can all be yourselves.”

The 27-year-old singer briefly discussed her 2013 tour-canceling hip surgery — she was in a wheelchair for four months and has three screws in her hip — and her messages to fans regarding difficulties she’s had with the release of “ARTPOP,” which has only sold 673,773 units since its November release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. (In 2011, Gaga’s “Born This Way” sold 1.1 million copies in its first week; 660,000 copies were sold regularly, and the rest through a 99 cents deal with Amazon).

She reached a low point, she said, when those around her began to encourage her to abandon her instincts and go for a less polarizing image.

SXSW Lady Gaga

“That’s the thing that poisoned me … (people saying) ‘We want you to be beautiful’ over and over and over in my head until I just wanted to look ugly all the time because I’m rebellious,” Lady Gaga said. “Don’t tell me not to do anything because it’s going to happen. That really crushed me. I’ve won Grammys now. I’ve written albums. I’ve toured the world four times. You’re telling me to be beautiful? That’s what this is all about? Is it all about tits and a–? That’s so sad.”

While Gaga is known for her odd looks — including dressing in drag and wearing false teeth — she’s also been known to shed her clothing onstage; at the MTV Video Music Awards last year, she stripped down to a seashell bra top and a thong during her performance.

Gaga’s rebellious inclination was on display Thursday night during a corporate-sponsored concert at Stubb’s BBQ where she invited friend and performance artist Millie Brown to vomit paint on her during the song “Swine.”

“It was just exciting to see people talk about performance art on the Internet and debating whether it’s art or not,” she said.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Rapper Tyler, the Creator, played a sold-out show in Dallas just hours after being released from jail in connection with a misdemeanor charge of inciting a riot.

The Odd Future rapper, whose name is Tyler Gregory Okonma, was arrested at Austin-Bergstrom Airport on Saturday. Inciting a riot is a misdemeanor, which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Tyler was released Saturday after securing a $25,000 bond and played a sold-out show at the House of Blues in Dallas. The rapper’s publicist declined to comment about the arrest.

Police say the 23-year-old Los Angeles resident incited a large crowd of fans to push their way past venue employees controlling access to a Thursday unofficial day party that was already at full capacity.

Officers who were at the scene said in a warrant that Tyler yelled for fans to push their way inside twice, and that a bartender had to protect a woman from injury in the resulting push.

Police released a video from the concert that shows scores of fans bursting through a gate at the Scoot Inn in downtown Austin.

Tyler and members of the Odd Future collective were denied a visa to travel to New Zealand in February after officials there said they were a potential “public threat” because of past troubles, “including incidents at past performances in which they have incited violence.” They pointed to a 2011 incident in which police were called to a comic book store in Boston where fans became unruly.

The group’s manager, Christian Clancy, defended them last month after the New Zealand decision, saying they were young at the time and were being judged too harshly.

MIAMI (AP) — A May 5 trial date was set Tuesday for Justin Bieber in the Florida case charging him with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and possessing an invalid driver’s license.

Prosecutor Daniel Diaz-Balart also said at a brief hearing that no plea offer has been made for the 20-year-old pop singer, who has pleaded not guilty. Bieber’s attorney, Roy Black, also said there was no plea deal on the table and none had been rejected, even though first offenders in most similar cases are offered a plea to avoid potential jail time.

“All we’re going to say is, we’re going to prepare for a trial and that Mr. Bieber has pleaded not guilty,” Black told reporters.

The initial March trial date was postponed while attorneys for news organizations and Bieber wrestled with release of police videos of him giving a urine sample for a drug test. Those videos were made public last week with sensitive segments blacked out.

Bieber and R&B singer Khalil Amir Sharieff were arrested Jan. 23 in Miami Beach after what police called an illegal drag race with high-end sports cars. Breath tests showed Bieber’s blood-alcohol content was below the 0.02 limit for underage drivers. Other tests detected marijuana and Xanax.

Miami-Dade County Judge William Altfield said Sharieff has a separate April 7 trial date on a DUI charge. He too has pleaded not guilty.

Black was also asked about a deposition Bieber gave last week in a lawsuit filed by a photographer who claims he was roughed up and threatened by one of the singer’s bodyguards. Video of that deposition quickly began appearing on Internet sites, which Black criticized Tuesday as an invasion of Bieber’s privacy.

Among other things, Black said, Bieber was asked in the deposition about topics such as his relationships with singers Selena Gomez and Usher “that had nothing to do with the case.” A judge previously denied motions to keep Bieber’s deposition sealed, he added.

“He has absolutely no privacy,” Black said. “There’s absolutely no protection for somebody like Justin.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California judge ordered Chris Brown to remain in an anger-management rehab program and told the pop singer to return to court in two months.

On Friday, Superior Court Judge James Brandlin scheduled Brown’s next hearing for April 23. That would come after what’s expected to be a brief assault trial in Washington, D.C., earlier that month.

Prosecutors have asked that Brown be sent to jail for violating probation with his October arrest in the district. In that incident, Brown and his bodyguard are accused of punching a man and breaking his nose outside a hotel. Brown is on probation for his 2009 attack on then-girlfriend, Rihanna.

But Brown’s attorneys have asked the judge to await the outcome of the Washington, D.C., case before hearing evidence on whether Brown should go to jail.

Beats Music

You can never have too many on-demand music streaming apps. That’s probably what music producer Jimmy Iovine and hip hop mogul Dr. Dre were thinking when they came up with Beats Music.

Launched a month ago on January 21, 2014, Beats Music is the latest subscription-based online music streaming service to hit a market already saturated with apps like Spotify and Rhapsody. As NPR notes, it’s gotten a lot of positive attention so far thanks in large part to its lineup of superstar playlist makers and curators. The popular Beats brand certainly doesn’t hurt, either.

As stiff as the competition is, though, it’s not hard to see why the Beats team decided to enter the music app market. After all, there’s no denying the fact that music app landscape is a very lucrative one. A recent report from Billboard.com reveals that revenue generated by music apps grew by 77% in 2013 alone. This comes at a time when digital track sales have shown a steady decline.

Of course, not everybody can afford having more than one streaming music subscription on their devices. Thus, the question remains: does Beats Music have what it takes to stand tall against other similar services? Let’s compare it with some of the top on demand music streaming apps out there – Spotify,Google Play Music All Access, Rhapsody, and Slacker – and see if it does.

Price

A standard Beats Music subscription is pegged at $9.99 a month, or $119.88 a year. That’s the same price as every other app on our list with the exception of Slacker, which offers more flexible subscription plans that range from $3.99 to $9.99 a month. All five offer free trial periods for new users.

Slacker’s $3.99 monthly subscription plan, which limits you to on demand playlists, helps sets it apart from the other services. If you want full access (which is likely the reason why you’re looking for a music streaming app in the first place), the fact that all of them are capped at the same price point makes this a five-way tie.

Availability

Spotify leads the pack by a large margin by being available in a grand total of 60 countries. Google Play Music All Access comes in at a distant second place with an audience of 21 countries. Slacker’s availability is limited to the US and Canada, while Beats Music and Rhapsody (if you don’t count the latter’s more widely-available Napster service) are only available in the US.

Availability is where Beats Music definitely gets left in the dust, but it’s kept company by Rhapsody. Keep in mind, though, that the former is still basically in its infancy so the list of countries in which the service is available is may still be expanded outside of the US in the future. That’s hopeful news for every Beats fan, especially globe-trotting poker pros since, according to partypoker writer and podcaster Daniel Batliner as well as fellow poker journalist and player Lee Davy, they prioritize Beats headphones over any other brand when on the tournament circuit. As two of the top 3 poker players in the world – Daniel Negreanu and Phil Ivey – are practically never seen wearing any other brand, they’re likely right. Rhapsody, on the other hand, is pretty much a lost cause, as is Slacker.

Catalog

This category can be what makes or breaks a streaming music service. Although none of the five services have ever bothered to release exact figures on the size of their music catalogs, Beats Music, Spotify, and Rhapsody all claim to have 20 million songs available. Google Play Music All Access claims to have 18 million while Slacker’s 13 million songs bring up the rear.

It seems like a pretty even field, but it’s important to keep in mind that no single streaming music catalog is perfect. Exclusive deals, such as Metallica songs only being available on Spotify, can skew things in one service’s favor. Google Play Music All Access, however, largely eschews exclusivity and instead allows users to upload up to 20,000 songs of their own choosing onto Google’s cloud, giving them access to their own non-DRM songs anytime, anywhere, and on whatever device they happen to have on-hand. The other services remain competitive, but that feature alone puts Google Play Music All Access the win here.

Offline Listening

If you opt for Slacker’s $9.99 subscription plan then all five services allow users to download tracks to their devices for offline listening. The only remaining difference is in how many songs you can download. Beats Music, Rhapsody, Google Play All Access, and Slacker all offer unlimited downloads. Spotify, on the other hand, has a 10,000-track cap which can be distributed over up to three devices. Sorry, Spotify.

Final verdict

Beats Music didn’t win a single one of the categories we listed above, but that pales next to the fact that it stays competitive against more well-established services. For a streaming service that’s barely a month old, that’s more than impressive. Bottom line: Beats Music is here to stay.

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s leading rock festival is going a little bit country.

Organizers said Thursday that Dolly Parton will play the Glastonbury Festival on June 29.

Festival programmer Emily Eavis told the BBC that “it’s been something we’ve been wanting to happen for a long time. And she finally said yes.”

Parton, whose hits include “9 to 5″ and “Jolene,” also tweeted the news.

Held on the Eavis family farm in southwest England, Glastonbury is Britain’s most prestigious summer music festival. About 120,000 tickets for the June 25-29 event sold out before any acts were announced.

This year’s lineup is still largely a secret, although members of Arcade Fire have announced the band will perform.

Last year’s festival included performances from the Rolling Stones, Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys and Kenny Rogers.

NEW YORK (AP) — Neil Young is not done with writing memoirs.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has a deal with Blue Rider Press for a book focusing on his passion for cars, while also featuring stories about his life in music.

Blue Rider, an imprint of Penguin Random House, told The Associated Press on Monday that the new book is scheduled for the fall and is currently untitled. Young’s first memoir, “Waging Heavy Peace,” was a best-seller published by Blue Rider in 2012.

New Rider says the second memoir is an “eclectic amalgam” that also will include artwork by Young and his thoughts on politics and the environment. The 68-year-old musician is known for such songs as “Heart of Gold,” ”Like a Hurricane” and “Southern Man.”

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal lawsuit filed in New York charges that Sony Music Entertainment cheated “American Idol” contestants including Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood out of at least $10 million in royalties.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday by 19 Recordings, a music company founded by “Idol” creator Simon Fuller.

The lawsuit says 19 discovered the royalty issue from two separate audits of Sony’s records.

Other artists named in the suit include Clay Aiken, Chris Daughtry and Jordin Sparks.

Attorney Richard Busch, of the Nashville firm King & Ballow, says the legal action was necessary to protect the rights of 19′s artists.

A Sony spokeswoman said she had no comment on the lawsuit.

Justin Bieber under arrest

MIAMI (AP) — A judge said Thursday he will review police video made shortly after Justin Bieber’s recent Miami Beach arrest to determine if some portions should be withheld from the public, particularly clips depicting the singer urinating into a cup as part of a drug test.

Miami-Dade County Judge William Altfield said after a hearing he will privately review some of the roughly 10 hours of Miami Beach police video taken after Bieber’s Jan. 23 arrest. The Associated Press, The Miami Herald and other media organizations are seeking release of the video, arguing there is no exemption in Florida’s generous open records law allowing it to be kept under wraps.

“The right of privacy cannot trump the right of access to public records,” said Deanna Shullman, the attorney for the AP and several other media outlets. “My clients have no interest in showing Mr. Bieber’s private parts. You have to redact that and release the rest.”

Still, Shullman and Scott Ponce, who represents the Herald and Miami’s CBS affiliate, agreed with Altfield’s plan to review the four clips that show Bieber urinating into the cup, as did state prosecutors. Bieber attorney Howard Srebnick said he found it “insulting” that the videos could be released perhaps with only Bieber’s nether regions censored, contending even that was a violation of privacy.

“There’s no reason why the media should make a spectacle of that event,” Srebnick said.

Altfield said he would hold another hearing on the matter March 4, meaning the current March 3 trial date for Bieber will be delayed. But he said if the various sides could agree on release of non-objectionable video material, that should be done by Wednesday.

“It’s prudent for us to make sure we’re all on the same page, all of us,” he said.

Bieber, 19, has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor charges of DUI, resisting arrest and driving with an expired license. Police say he and singer Khalil Amir Sharieff were stopped after a suspected illegal street drag race in exotic sports cars in a quiet Miami Beach neighborhood.

The toxicology test based on Bieber’s urine sample found the active ingredient in marijuana and the antidepressant Xanax. A breath test, however, showed Bieber’s blood-alcohol content was below Florida’s 0.02 percent limit for underage drivers.

The other news organizations advocating for release of the video are: the Orlando Sentinel; Scripps Media Inc. representing the Naples Daily News, the St. Lucie News Tribune, Stuart News, TCPalm.com, the Vero Beach Press Journal, WPTV-TV and WFTS-TV; and the SunSentinel Co.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelan folk singer-songwriter Simon Diaz has died at age 85, prompting an outpouring of mourning in the country that considered the man known as “Uncle Simon” to be a national treasure.

His daughter Bettsimar Diaz confirmed his death on her Twitter account, but gave no details.

Diaz’s most often-performed song is “Caballo Viejo,” which translates as “Old Horse.” It was one of more than 200 songs he composed while recording 70 albums. His popularity grew as he hosted a children’s television show and appeared in five films.

Both the leftist government and its opponents in the bitterly divided nation paid homage to the singer on Wednesday.

Education Minister Hector Rodriguez says a song in honor of Diaz will be performed in all Venezuelan schools on Thursday.
